French Toile de Jouy Handbag - Floral Quail - Red & Beige

Elegant and beautifully handcrafted Toile de Jouy handbag. It features a red background with floral motive on one side and a medallion with quails surrounded by more flowers on the other side. The handles and bottom are beige. The bag is fully lined with an off-white cotton fabric and has an inside pocket, a removable rigid bottom and a magnetic closure.

Toile de Jouy is cotton or linen fabric printed with designs of landscapes, pastoral scenes, gardens, mythology … for which the factory of Jouy-en-Josas, near Versailles was famous. The Jouy factory was started in 1760 by a Franco-German, Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf. Traditionally those fairly complex decorating patterns were printed on white or off-white background. More modern toiles de Jouy have bolder colors. Designs are still monochrome but with a broader range of colors like magenta, red, green, brown…
